Many aspiring martial artists are passionate about their art and would like to share their passion with others. It’s only natural! This can be true regardless of their chosen martial art style.

Most of these individuals have the best intentions and are willing to teach others in some capacity. The real question is, how do they take this to the next level? How does one become a martial arts instructor? Let’s take a closer look at how this is done.

Mastering the Style of Your Choice

One of the most challenging steps to becoming proficient in any discipline is attaining a black belt. This is done through hard work, dedication, and perseverance. For most people, attaining this rank will take around two to three years, depending on the discipline. It can take up to five years for those dedicated to attending at least twice a week.

This is also generally considered to be a requirement for instructors. After all, people are looking to learn from masters, not novices hoping to share their two cents.

Many instructors will also specialize in one discipline but train in other styles. This allows them to provide their students with more effective and interesting lessons.

Other Skills to Consider

One of the most critical skills an instructor should have is good knowledge of martial art. They should also be able to organize and implement practical training sessions. They should be able to motivate their students by providing them with the necessary tools and techniques to improve their abilities. Usually, these sessions are conducted for the entire year and coincide with the tournaments.

Although amateur instructors are less demanding than professionals, they still have to work very hard and be ready to do their job if their students don’t bring home a medal or a ticket to the Olympics.

Qualifications

Most instructors, regardless of their choice of style, usually need to have a 1st-degree black belt to teach. This is because of the various skills they should have to instruct their students effectively.

Black belts are typically regarded as instructors in martial arts. They can be hired and placed in positions within the discipline if they have attained this rank. However, some styles require higher black belt levels to start instructing.

It’s also generally a requirement for instructors to have a black belt to share their knowledge with their students effectively. This certification proves they have the necessary skills to do their job.
